I know, I know, some of you might be thinking, “But I don’t want to get all bulky.” Trust me, that’s not going to happen unless you’re on some serious steroids or something. For us women, strength training helps build lean muscle mass, which in turn boosts our metabolism. So we can eat that extra slice of pizza (yes, I’m all about balance here) and still not gain weight. I started with just some light dumbbells at home. You can do simple exercises like bicep curls, shoulder presses, and squats. And as you get stronger, you can gradually increase the weight. Now, let’s talk about diet. I’m not a fan of strict diets. I mean, who wants to live on just salads and chicken breast all the time? That’s no way to live. Instead, I focus on eating whole, nutritious foods most of the time. Load up on fruits and vegetables. They’re full of vitamins and fiber that keep our skin glowing and our digestion on point. Lean proteins like fish, chicken, and beans are also great for building muscle and keeping us full. And don’t forget about healthy fats. Avocados, nuts, and olive oil are my go-tos. But that doesn’t mean I don’t indulge in a treat every now and then. A piece of chocolate or a scoop of ice cream on a weekend? Hell yeah! Just remember moderation is key.
Another important aspect is rest. Our bodies need time to recover after a workout. I used to be one of those people who thought more was better and would work out every day. But then I realized I was getting more tired and not seeing as much progress. Now, I make sure to give myself at least one or two days off a week. And getting enough sleep is crucial. I aim for seven to eight hours a night. When I sleep well, I wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on my next workout.
Motivation can be a struggle sometimes. There are days when I just don’t feel like working out. But I’ve learned some tricks to get myself going. One is to have cute workout gear. Seriously, when you look good, you feel good. Investing in some nice sports bras, leggings, and tops makes me excited to put them on and get moving. Another is to find a workout buddy. It could be a friend, a sister, or even your mom. Having someone to hold you accountable and chat with during the workout makes it so much more enjoyable. And if you can’t find a real-life buddy, there are online fitness communities where you can connect with other women on the same journey.
